Matthew Morey, PhD

I provide psychotherapy services for adults, individuals and couples, teens, children, and families. My focus is on helping you create supportive relationships and an authentic and creative life.  I utilize mindfulness in combination with several different types of psychotherapy practice, including the following: relational, existential, humanistic, gestalt, non-dual, and psychodynamic. I welcome people who are working with relationship and communication issues, anxiety and depression, and questions around self-esteem, isolation, and meaning.

My style is warm, thoughtful, and interactive. I have a deep respect for personal struggles. I also have deep faith in the process of psychotherapy, based on my years of helping people to change and grow.

Health Insurance
I am not on any insurance provider networks, however I will be happy to provide you with a statement of services to send to your insurance company for an out-of-network reimbursement.

Experience and Education
Much of my practical education comes from traveling the world and the various jobs I have had over the years. I have taught math and biology in Sierra Leone and New York City; I have tended a pub in London; and I have taught English in Japan. Additonally, among dozens of other odd jobs, I have worked in kitchens, on construction, as a bike messenger, and on sailboats. I have attended 20 or so mindfulness and metta retreats, whose impact has been great.

My formal education includes the following:

  • B.A. English Major / Math Minor, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT 1990
  • M.A. Anthropological Foundations of Education / Educational Leadership, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT 1993
  • M.S.T. Teacher Education, New School for Social Research, NYC 1995
  • M.A. Integral Counseling Psychology, California Institute of Integral Studies, San Francisco 2007
  • Ph.D. East-West Psychology, California Institute of Integral Studies, San Francisco, 2013

“The intimacy that arises in listening and speaking truth is only possible if we can open to the vulnerability of our own hearts. Breathing in, contacting the life that is right here, is our first step. Once we have held ourselves with kindness, we can touch others in a vital and healing way.”

 -Tara Brach
